Willow We grow 30 species and hybrids of willow (genus Salix) for a wide variety of uses: basket and hurdle making, hedge binders, sculptures (living and dead), planting stock, screens, decoration, engineering and more. Hazel Planted in 1999, our hazel is yielding poles good enough for hurdles and a range of other traditional jobs - pea sticks, bean poles, spars, etc. This is very exciting as the eight hectare plantation, which includes areas of other broadleaved tree species, extends a very small remnant of semi-natural ancient woodland we have been looking after and enjoying since 1996. Willow and hazel are
available for you to work yourself.

| Knacking for the unwary Martin Hazell (extraordinary maker of things baskety, oudologist, tambourine/serpent pundit) is currently working to revive an old technique of basket making using split hazel rods. The term knacking was proposed after several minutes of research. It applies to the de-lamination of rods from a notch, producing strips that can be used immediately or re-soaked after drying. We hope to have some pictures of finished baskets here soon, and possibly offer some for sale; but thought you might like to see the process in action. |

Willow and hazel products
We also produce a range of products using our own willow and hazel - traditional English baskets of many shapes and sizes, made by local crafstman Martin Hazell, using (mostly) our willow, woven balls and other unusual forms, hurdles (willow and hazel), etc. |
